What's This Bug?

NOT ALL INSECTS ARE BAD!

Insects are astonishingly prolific, with an estimated 10 quintillion of them alive at any given moment globally. This staggering figure illustrates their immense diversity and abundance. Experts have documented approximately 900,000 to 1 million insect species, but the actual number, including undiscovered species, could be as high as 30 million. These insects play pivotal roles in various ecosystems, serving as pollinators, decomposers, and a vital food source for other wildlife.

In the United States, there are about 91,000 recognized insect species, suggesting significant biodiversity, particularly in ecosystems like tropical forests where many species remain uncharted. The vast diversity of insect life underscores the importance of both understanding and preserving these creatures due to their essential ecological roles.

For those interested in learning more about the role of insects in our ecosystems and their preservation, resources like those provided by academic institutions and entomological societies offer in-depth insights into the complex world of insects.
